THE TALE OF CLIVE THE CUCUMBER

I work in Fashion. I grow vegetables. Two completely separate activities. How did the two combine?

Back in early June, I was given two cucumber plants by my allotment neighbour, Hope. She had some plants to spare and thought I would enjoy a few cucumbers to go with the tomatoes I had just planted. I had always thought that you could only grow cucumbers in a greenhouse so I was rather intrigued to see what these plants could produce. Needless to say I was totally excited and delighted by seeing the small yellow flowers turn into tiny cucumbers which then turned into the most delicious, sweet and juicy fruit. So I became a total cucumber convert.

Fast forward to mid July. I get an email from the editor of Rubbish magazine asking if any of the designers I work with would be interested in providing a miniature outfit for a photographic feature called “Salad Dressing”. I loved this idea and after a long chat, I asked if they would use one of my cucumbers for the shoot to ‘wear’ one of my designers’ clothes. The deal was sealed on the spot, Henry Holland was briefed about the shoot and the wheels were sent in motion. I had a worrying moment when the shoot got postponed by a few weeks and it looked like I wouldn’t have any cucumbers left, but the gods were smiling on me and the shoot date was confirmed just in time for my last cucumber to be at its most beautiful and juicy best. It was picked, cocooned in bubble wrap and hand delivered to the shoot. I was both excited and nervous to see the results. Nothing could have prepared me for the sheer joy, and pride, I felt when the email popped into my inbox with the results of the shoot – amazing is the only word to describe the image. Thank you Rubbish magazine.

I’m glad to report that not only did ‘Clive’ model the clothes beautifully, he also provided some nourishment for the team involved after his session was over.

Fashion and vegetables –  a match made in Rubbish heaven!
